A History of CBD
Cannabidiol or CBD is a naturally occurring substance found primarily in the hemp plant and in lower quantities in the marijuana plant. Historical records show that hemp was one of the earliest plants cultivated by humans and there is evidence of cultivation nearly 12,000 years ago. The law distinguishes between the marijuana plant and the hemp plant based on whether there is greater than, or less than 0.3% THC by dry weight.
The cannabis plant is indigenous to central Asia and a report by University of Lausanne in Switzerland suggests that cannabis was domesticated in Northwest China approximately 12,000 years ago. However, the first confirmed mention of cannabis being used for its medicinal properties occurred in the Ebers Papyrus [fig 1], an Egyptian medical papyrus of herbal knowledge, written over 3,500 years ago.

Despite the historic prevalence of both hemp and marijuana, scientists knew very little about the chemical structures and properties of CBD and all other cannabinoids until the 1940s. In 1940, Rodger Adams was the first person to isolate CBD from the Cannabis sativa L. plant, however, he was unable to describe the chemical structure. 6 years later, Dr. Walter S. Loewe ran trials on rabbits and mice, and this resulted in the first indications that CBD lacked any psychotropic activity.
Dr Raphael Mechoulam was the first person to describe the chemical structure of CBD in 1964 and as a result, he was able to conclude that it was THC rather than CBD that caused sedated and intoxicated effects. This resulted in the skyrocketing of potential CBD based medicines and British Pharmacopoeia released a cannabis tincture in the 1970s which contained CBD in a full-spectrum oil. Here at CBD Success, we sell a full range of CBD purities including CBD in its purest form, from CBD Isolate produced by Natural Science to HempWell Broad Spectrum CBD Oil, which can be found in strengths from 500mg – 3000mg.
It was only in the 1980s that Mechoulam realised CBD’s potential for treating epilepsy where each subject in the trial of CBD treatment for epilepsy experienced an improved condition. Ever since, there has been continued exploration into the potential benefits of CBD products. Here at CBD Success, we sell a wide variety of CBD products, as we believe that CBD can pave the way for a brighter future. We have a vast range of CBD for sale from some of the most trusted CBD brands such as 365CBD, Elixinol and Endoca. We hope that, with further research and clinical trials, CBD can become a mainstream remedy and we intend to be ready with a selection of products that will shine a new light on the benefits of CBD and hemp oil.
